Required Assignment 2
Mind Body and Spirit
I was quite confused with this survey. I was not sure on how to answer many of the questions because the question did not appear clear to me. And for the questions that I did understand, they were still challenging to answer. I am not as aware as others may be on the mind, body, and spirit. I have some beliefs on how things work, but I have not really studied such information.
In class we studied a little bit on the mind and how it works, but that was not enough to have me make any decisions. I do believe that the mind has control over the body, because in my opinion, the mind controls every part of us. If we allow it to, it can make us do anything. The mind is a lot more powerful than most of us believe it to be. After all, the mind is generated through our perceptions and through everything that we experience.
This survey brought to my attention that the obstacles and experiences that we go through everyday, become a part of who we are today. Nothing really goes by us without affecting us. We can try to deny anything we want, but the mind always stores everything. Through time, our experiences shape us in different ways. Our minds may alter as well as our perception of the world. This was an interesting survey because it made me brainstorm and think of the different ways in which our bodies function.
Core Beliefs: What I Learned From My Parents
This survey has made me realize that my parents have in fact taught me everything that I know today. I have never asked myself or have considered these types of questions. Even though I am answering questions based on my life, it has still showed me the importance of my life. It opened up my eyes to what I should be appreciating and valuing in life.
As children, we forget to appreciate the things that our parents have showed us. Many of us believe that we would be just fine without our parents, but the reality is that I would not be half of what I am today without them. My parents have brought me up correctly and I am satisfied with who I am today.
Not only have they taught me everything that I know today, but they gave me a sense as to how to treat others. I am an intellectual, open-minded girl because I was raised to be that way. I was always told to aim for the best in life, and if you don’t get there then that’s fine. I was never pressured to do anything I didn’t want to, but I did pressure myself into getting the important things in life. Of course our parents may not always make us happy, but we know that everything they do is for our own benefit.
Core Beliefs: How I Was Raised
I found this survey interesting because I noticed that it mentions different customs and practices from various cultures. There were some customs that I have never heard of and that caught my attention. It also made realize how different one culture is from another. Something as simple as eye contact or a hand shake can have a variety of meanings. This shows that people should really take the initiative upon themselves to learn from and about different cultures.
I answered each and every question based on the customs I am used to in my household. My entire family is Cuban and they basically do things the way they want to. There are no set of rules that need to be followed or that should be met. The children need to always listen to their parents regardless of what they want to do. In my culture, your parents are always right and they have a say in what you are to do. When your parents are speaking to you, you must look at them in the eye; if not it is considered disrespectful. Respect is very important when it comes to Cuban parents because they always need to have control of their family. Even though the father is considered the head of the house, I would have to say that my parents make decisions together. The father may make the ultimate decision, but he does it with some of the mothers input.
The family that I have that lives in Florida do not exactly do things the traditional way. My family has become accustomed to the American ways of doing things. I have not really seen much of a difference in the way that I do things and the way that my friends do things. I am sure that the people living in Cuba still have their customs and ways of doing things.
Beliefs About Men
This survey was a bit difficult to answer because most of these questions are based on stereotypical things. For example, I have come across men who do not like to share their feelings and who shutdown when something is wrong, but I know that not all men are like this so I had trouble answering the question. Many of these questions begin to make you wonder what the opposite sex is really like.
I would love to see the results of a male taking this survey. What is interesting is that I know their answers will greatly differ to those of a female. I answered these questions to the best of my knowledge while trying not to be judgmental. Men, on the other hand, would probably also have trouble answering these questions because it may be difficult to see themselves in such a format. Many of these questions do apply to several males that I know, and I am certain that they would still deny the truth. I have heard men say that they have to protect their reputation as men against women.
I am not entirely certain, but I believe that each and every male is different from each other. Yes, they may have qualities that are similar to other males, but they are capable of making their own decisions just like everyone else is. This type of survey is very interesting because it made me eager to find out the real answers. It made me want to analyze men to another extent.
Beliefs About Women
As a woman, I found this women-based survey easier to answer than the men-based one. At times I had to remind myself that I am answering the questions based on ALL women rather than on myself. It was easier for me to answer these questions because being a woman, I have more of an idea of the way we behave and react to different situations. Not only am I able to notice the way I view things, but I frequently have such conversations with my female friends and realize that they feel the same way at times.
Even though this survey was much less difficult in answering, there were still some questions that made me think. I had to picture myself in a certain situation just to see in which way I would react. Being a young woman, I have thought about the ways that I have acted in the past and I know that the way I rationalize today would be completely different. If I was given this survey a few years ago, I could honestly say that my answers would probably be completely different than the answers I have provided today. I have a different mindset than I once did and there have been several factors in life that have changed it. I would even say that my answers might slightly change if I were to take this survey several years from now.

One question that always makes me think is whether or not women are more nurturing than men. In my opinion, I feel that most women have that natural instinct to be nurturing rather than a man. I also based this question on my life experience and I find my mother more nurturing than I do my father. Even though I believe all this, I am still not certain as to what the real answer is. I know that men can be just as nurturing as women can and sometimes they might even be better at it.
Beliefs About Race
After completing this survey, I couldn’t help but think about everything I have learned on racism and racial profiling. I found some of these questions to be somewhat disturbing because I know that this is the way some people think. It made me think about all of those people who are racist and who would agree with some of these questions. Many of these questions are based on racial comments I have come into contact with before.
Being Hispanic, I did not have trouble answering these questions at all. I felt that they were all racist based questions that anyone in the right state of mind should have disagreed with all of them. Just because someone is from a certain race, doesn’t mean that they all behave the same way or that they all share the same characteristics. People have the tendency to categorize people based on their ethnicity.
The tricky part about all of this is that sometimes you do see people from a certain race with several things in common. Many of them share the same color eyes, hair, and skin color. But as always, everyone is never the same as another person. There have been times where I try to compare people to guess their ethnicity and I have been proven wrong. This goes to show that not everyone looks or acts the same.

I found this survey somewhat difficult to answer. I have absolutely nothing against homosexuals, but I do have my own beliefs as to what I think is right and what is wrong. I had to think about my choice of answer before I marked it because I did not want to make it seem as if I believe they are to be ashamed of. As I have mentioned before, I am perfectly able to communicate with homosexuals and I in fact have many friends who are homosexual. Whether they are gay or lesbians, they are all the same to me. I do not feel awkward around homosexuals and I am able to enjoy my time with anyone as long as I choose to do so. Even though I acknowledge the fact that some people may be homosexuals, I do not necessarily agree with the fact that they are.
I believe that homosexuals should have the same rights as everyone else does because would not be kind to exclude those people who are different from you. Homosexuals obviously have a different view point as to their sex preference in relationships, but this shouldn’t determine what freedoms they have. They need to be treated like every other human being is because that is exactly what they are—human beings.
At the end of the day, no matter which way you look at it, everyone is going to be different than you in one shape or another. If everyone where to be treated rudely because of their differences, then we ourselves would be victims. I may not agree with the choices that homosexuals have made, but I would never believe that they are any less important than any other individual. In my eyes they are not seen as freak shows, weirdo’s, or as people who deserve to be punished. They are regular human beings with wants, desires, hopes, and dreams.
Your Educational Philosophy
I found this survey interesting because it opened my eyes as to what I should be expecting as a teacher. I should have my own views on each and every subject. I should be able to know what learning styles suit my students and how I can best assess them. These questions demonstrate the types of things that teachers need to be well informed in. they need to be prepared to get into a classroom and be able to teach the students effectively. Many times the instructors are told to teach a certain way based on the school rules. Even though the teacher may be limited to certain ways in teaching, they need to be able to use their resources to their advantage and carry on with their lesson.
As a student myself, I find it easier to grasp concepts when they involve hands on activities. I enjoy being able to “see” the material being learned rather than just listening about it. As an instructor I know that young children prefer to do things with their own hands. Being able to keep young children concentrated on the subject can be difficult, but this is where the hands on activities come into play.
Not only is math, reading, and writing important in a child’s education, but it is also important that children know how to use their common sense. Children need to be exposed to these types of things early in their childhood so they can continue to learn as they grow. Such environments that put common sense to use need to be implemented into the classrooms. This in turn helps kids grasp the concept of things quicker and it also helps them rationalize more effectively.
Your Political Typology
After completing this survey and reading my results based on the “upbeat” group, I realized that I agree with things because I choose to agree with them. I never let anyone choose what I should believe in or determine what I think to be right from wrong. I rather not say anything at all than have to make a decision on a subject that I know little about. I am the type of person that does their research in order to come up with their own conclusions. I also have the tendency to second guess people unless I know the for sure answer myself.
My results mention that I am probably a George W. Bush supporter, but I can honestly say that I was never really into politics. I do not know much about George W. Bush because I chose not to know much. I am concerned about the environment and I support those who are trying to make a difference. It also says that I have a favorable view of immigrants which is true. I personally have nothing against people who are striving for a better future. I also believe that immigrants are doing the jobs that most of us would not even think about doing. I have respect for them because they have come a long way and even now that they are where they want to be, most of them are still struggling and working hard for what they have.

Reflection 16
Transsexuals are people who are uncomfortable in the body that they are in. They feel that their gender is completely different from their body. Transsexuals live their lives as if they were the sex they feel they are. Most transsexuals have relationships with people of their same sex and do not consider themselves homosexuals. Intersexuality, on the other hand, is when a person shares both male and female sexual characteristics.
In my opinion, intersexuality seems to be a bigger issue than what transsexuals go through. Intersexuals have a reason to be confused about their gender because they actually have certain characteristics or body parts of both males and females. I believe that transsexuals need to accept their body because that is who they are. They seem to be suffering from some kind of mental illness that makes them question their sex. If you are born a male or female, then I believe that is your correct gender and there should be no need to say otherwise. I am aware that some people just do not feel comfortable in their own bodies because they believe they are the wrong sex, but I think it is all mental.
I also agree with intersexuals wanting to have surgery rather than a transsexual. Some intersexuals share body parts of both sexes but still know what sex they truly are, while others do not. Intersexuals should be allowed to have an operation to make them “normal” if they choose to do so and there are no other complications. Those wanting operations are not in seek of changing their body to make it appear as the opposite sex such as transsexuals.
Overall, it is very difficult to live either as a transsexual or as an intersexual. Both groups of people are uncomfortable because they feel that they are different from the rest of society. They have to go about their lives everyday feeling as if they don’t fit in. Studying these topics has made me become more understanding to those who are suffering from such complications. There are many people in the world that will just reject those who are different from them, but this is not the correct way to go about this. I am sensitive to all kinds of people because I am aware of the fact that no one is perfect and there are individuals who may have more imperfections than others.

Reflection 15
To begin with, I would like to start off by saying that I have nothing against homosexuals of any kind. I see them the same way I do everyone else and that perspective will never change. My view on homosexuality is that these individuals have chosen their sexual preference. I do not believe that they were born homosexuals because there is no scientific research that has proven this assumption. I believe that homosexuality can perhaps be triggered through different experiences in life. For example, some people only feel comfortable around their same sex. Sharing this level of comfort with someone can entice you to begin developing feelings for them. This does not only happen to homosexuals, this happens to everyone. It has occurred countless of times where a female/male begins to develop feelings for their female/male best friend. These best friends have been friends for years and thought that they would only be friends, but through the years they only grew closer and realized that they started developing feelings for each other. This same situation could have occurred to those who began developing feelings for people of their same sex. I also believe that the media has something to do with this. There are so many subliminal messages that are constantly being sent out to people, whether through movies, television shows or commercials. In today’s society, it has somehow become acceptable and hip to be homosexual. There is a completely different view on homosexuality today than there was several years ago. Society has also dramatically encouraged people to go ahead and “experience” what it’s like to engage in such relations.
On the other hand, after reading homosexual based articles, I began to see things differently. I am not saying that I agree with the fact that people are born as homosexuals, but I am saying that I can see how people have come to this assumption. I have seen a few kids who begin to show characteristics of a homosexual. They begin to have different interests and express themselves differently than most kids their age. Seeing such signs in such a young child can make you question whether or not one is born a homosexual. This child has no knowledge of such a thing and yet their minds are demonstrating something different.
Overall, I strongly feel that it is a matter of choice. Anyone has the power to choose who they like or dislike. The mind is a powerful thing and if you focus and try hard enough, you can control it. There is nothing that forces one to become a certain way, but once we start finding reasons and excuses for it, then it becomes a serious problem.

Reflection 14
What I got from this article is that the United States seems to be favoring Cuban immigrants over Haitian immigrants. I do not understand why the United States would favor Cubans over Haitians because they are both going through troubles in their homelands. My only problem is the way they deal with these immigrants. Haitians who were tested positive for HIV were secluded in a camp. This is degrading and unfair to those who suffer from that disease. It is understandable that the US does not want to allow those who are infected into the state because it can cause an outbreak, but were they in fact handling the situation correctly? How else are we supposed to keep those who already live here safe, yet satisfy the needs of those who are in search of a better life? I would definitely have to say that this was a form of discrimination against Haitians. They had the same intentions of arriving to the US as the Cubans did, yet they were not given a chance. Why is it that they were discriminated against? Where they “supposed” to cause more trouble? These questions may never be answered, but eventually something needs to be figured out. If the United States is going to allow immigrants to migrate and stay here, then the same rules need to apply to ALL immigrants.
In my opinion, I would not mind letting anyone and everyone come to the United States for a better life, but the reality is that this would not be the best solution. I understand why the United States has such laws on immigration and why it has become so difficult for illegal immigrants. As much as the government may or may not want these illegal immigrants in the US, they have to implement some rules to control the flow of people.
One law that I somewhat agree with is the Wet Foot, Dry Foot. Those who are caught in the process of coming to the US are sent back to their home countries and those who have already reached the US lands can remain. This agreement seems fair because it gives those who have already reached the US a chance to live the life they have always wanted. It would be unfair to have them finally reach the lands and have to be sent back. The unfortunate ones are those who tried to escape, but were caught right in the process of their journey. Reflection 13
I have learned quite a lot on race and racism through these articles and the class alone. I have always known that there are issues regarding race and racism, but I cannot say that I have studied it in depth the way I have done recently. It is astonishing to see the way people react to other human beings. One would never think that such a person could be so cruel to someone else because of their ethnicity. The sad part about racism is that the victims of it cannot change even if they wanted to. Those who are racist hate individuals for something that they have no control over. They seem to dislike people for who they are rather than what they have become. These articles have opened my eyes because there are several events that have occurred in the past that I was unaware of. The Holocaust has always been the most influential occurrence to me, but the story of Emmett Till has also affected me significantly. Emmitt Till was a young boy who deserved nothing but the best in life. His story touched me because it showed that even the innocent young ones dramatically suffered. There was such an enormous amount of hate built for blacks at the time that the whites acted in ways that were absurd. Emmitt Till was tortured, practically beaten to death, and then shot by two white men. Regardless of what Emmitt Till did, I do not believe anyone deserves the type of punishment he received. He may have acted in a way that was inappropriate for its time, but at the end of the day, he is a human being just like everyone else. We all know that those white men did not beat him because of what he did. Emmitt Till was killed because he was black and his actions were merely used as an excuse.

Even though I am not too sure what this poem is trying to express, I believe that it is saying our language goes with time. As future generations arise, a little bit more of our culture and language begin to relinquish. Language is very important to cultures because it’s what generally defines us. We have our own unique way of communicating and expressing the ways in which we are alike to those in our cultural group. It’s sad to know that our language changes and dies after some time. We begin to know less and less about our culture and what defines us.

This poem reminds me of the troubles we are facing today. We take everything for granted and do as we please without looking at the lifelong consequences. Little by little we are killing everything around us because of our selfish ways of living. Our actions affect everything around us and in return can eventually affect the way that we live. If we are slowly killing our Earth, then we will slowly die with it. We cannot expect to make irresponsible choices and still live perfectly fine. The human race needs to drastically change their ways because they are not only making it difficult for those living in this world today, but they are also making difficult for future generations.

Required Assignment 1
As I have been observing the instructor in the classroom, I have noticed that he demonstrates both sensitivity and equitable treatment towards his students. He has not only recognizes that he is educating students with different cultures, but he is aware of how to deal with such a situation. He is able to adequately teach his students with respect as well as be able to assist those who are in need of greater assistance. I believe the most difficult part of educating a culturally diverse group is teaching them about diversity in itself. This instructor has been able to teach his students about different types of cultures and hold classroom discussions without crossing the line. He is aware of what should and should not be said within a classroom environment. Even though there were such discussion dealing with culture, religion, and customs, the atmosphere remained comfortable. He created an atmosphere where you can comfortably express yourself and speak about what is on your mind. Just as the Human Diversity in Education textbook states “Involving children in lessons in which they can see themselves or their culture reflected in a variety of ways helps to create a solid sense of self as well as a classroom that is respectful and understanding of others.”
It is always important to get to know your student s before having such discussions because it will give you a better insight as to what sensitivities they may have. Reflection 12
Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing seem to have somewhat different definitions. Genocide is the want or desire to completely obliterate a certain group of people for whatever reason. Ethnic cleansing, on the other hand, is the desire to remove a group of people by genocide or by simply making them leave society. Despite their differences, I believe that they are both one in the same in which they are acted out based on hatred and anger. Whether completely demolishing a group or simply removing them, they are both incorrect in their ways. What makes you, or anyone else for that matter, better than someone? Why is it that people feel they need to victimize or harm others based on the way they view that particular group?
I am aware of the fact that atrocities such as these have occurred in the past, but it always catches me by surprise when I hear of such stories. I am always in shock when I hear and see the things that human beings are capable of doing to others. The scariest part of all of this is that there is a possibility we can revert back to these ways. There is so much hatred being built up on people who are culturally different that someone is bound to react in an absurd manner. It is not only based on the way that the community and society act towards each other, but it is also the way that the government has acted. Reflection 11
The Holocaust has been tragic for those were victims as well as for those who only know stories. Even though the Holocaust took place several years ago, it is still remembered today. There is great appreciation for those who were Holocaust victims because they have come such a long way and insist on letting everyone know what they have lived through. Knowing that these victims still have the strength to even speak about the Holocaust occurrences is impressive. There is a dramatic history behind every Jew that should be acknowledged and respected.
It is heartbreaking to hear rude comments from those people who deny that the Holocaust ever occurred. It would be insane for such a traumatic story to have been invented in the first place. There is clear evidence as to where the concentration camps are located, where there where countless victims killed, and even how they were killed. If this evidence is not enough to convince someone that the Holocaust is real, then I don’t know what will be. There are very few Holocaust survivors that are alive today to tell the story, but they themselves demonstrate enough evidence. I believe that the Holocaust deniers are people who may dislike Jews to begin with. Why else would someone have to question a particular group’s history? The deniers most probably believe that Jews are in seek of attention and recognition. I believe that these people need to research the Holocaust and make an effort to understand the victims. The only way to find out something for sure is by making an effort to learn and understand.

Reflection 10
Reading this article has given me an insight in the importance of our actions and words. Whether we mean to say something or not, there is always someone out there who is being put down or being demeaned because of what we say. This article has also made me realize that we are all prejudicial in one way or another. We might not think we are because we don’t mean to be, but there are times that we may say something or act in a certain way that is interpreted differently to other. We may have not realized it then, but this is the way that we have been taught since we were young. We hear other people say things and perhaps even our parents say things that are prejudiced. We live in a household where we are surrounded by our own people and those who somewhat share similar interests and beliefs. As we are being introduced to different cultures and different people, we begin to realize the differences we have and become judgmental. Prejudice thoughts also come forth when we experience a conflict with someone who is culturally different than we are. After this conflict, we usually tend to categorize them and view them as an entire group rather than unique individuals.
I have a greater amount of respect for those people who are trying to make a difference in this world. One step at time, these individuals are trying to create a peaceful environment for all to enjoy. I also have respect for those who have admitted to being prejudiced at one point or another because this demonstrates what they have learned. The very first step in breaking such prejudicial patterns among people is by identifying your own problems. I can honestly say that I have made comments that seem prejudice. I know that I do not hate a certain race because I have always been able to communicate and get along with people from different parts of the world, but that does not mean that I have not made prejudiced comments. The things I have said have not been to intentionally hurt someone nor have they been said to that persons face. I have made prejudiced comments just because I thought they were humorous at the time. What has come to my awareness is that it doesn’t matter in what way you mean to say these comments, they are still considered prejudiced comments and they should be put to an end. If we all become attentive to the way that we act and to the things that we say, we can help make this change as well. Once we have helped ourselves, we will then be able to help those who are in greater need.

Emmett Till: The Shaping of People's Dream
The story of Emmitt Till is both shocking and horrifying. How can it be that this little boy was the victim of two white men who had nothing else better to do? The part that astonished me the most is the fact that most, if not all, the white people knew that these two men where guilty. These white folks decided to defend them because they felt that was what they had to do. No one wanted to speak up and say what was on their mind out of fear. As days went by, a couple people decided to speak up and speak about what they saw and heard. This didn’t seem to really resolve anything either because the outcome was not what should have happened, but they at least know that they stood up for what was right and made it through. This story goes to show how far hatred can go. It makes me realize that we are not that far away from it occurring again today. If things continue to go about the way they are, we can revert back to how things used to be. Hatred of a particular group or person can create unimaginable chaos. If we choose to stand by and do nothing like the majority of the people, then we are also playing a part in the madness. We may think we are not participating, but we sure are accepting it.

Reflection 9
I am not quite sure why, but I would say that people consider Freud’s work on the Theory of Personality important because it does somehow give us a sense of how things work. Freud’s theory may not be correct, but it seems reasonable and I can see why some people will choose to agree with him. I, on the other hand, agree with Freud to a certain extent. Yes, sex and aggression may be drives, but I do not believe they are the only two drives that we have. Sex is not something that makes me want to continue on in life and neither is aggression. Sex and aggression seem to be aspects in life that may encourage us rather than be our drive. I can see how sex and aggression relate more to animals though. They do not have any reasoning skills and they are only left to do what they are meant to: procreate.
Something that I have to disagree on is when he said that we pursue college degrees so we can attract the opposite sex. Pursuing a college degree may play a part in attracting the opposite sex, but I do not believe it is our main goal. I am pursuing a college degree because I want to be successful in the future for myself. This has nothing to do with the opposite sex; it has to do with my career and the life that I choose to live. In order to become what I want to become in the future, it entails that I receive a college degree. There are some people that choose to not even have a relationship and the only thing that keeps them going is their education alone. These people have no desire to impress the opposite sex, they are only thinking about themselves and their interests. At the same time, you have people who pursue college degrees so they can prove something to others and make themselves seem more appealing, but this does not apply to everyone.

Perhaps his theories need to be better organized and very well explained so that I can get a better feel of what he is trying to express. This article defines what beliefs, values, and attitudes are in a way that can help you relate to your students more effectively. Being aware of the different kinds of beliefs, attitudes, and values will aid a teacher in identifying their student’s personality. It is important to get to know your students in this manner because they are more likely to react and respond differently than those students who are from other cultures. A variety of responses and behaviors will arise from your students due to their beliefs, and being prepared for such outcomes can help maintain a controlled environment within your classroom.
The most important thing that I have learned from this article is that everyone already knows that we are all different in the way that we think and act, but if you do not take the time to learn about the way people rationalize, nothing will get accomplished. In today’s world, it is always better to work in groups and put more than one mind to work. It would be extremely difficult for these groups to work together if they do not understand each other. There needs to be enough understanding and acceptance amongst people in order to be able to effectively communicate and get our ideas out there without offending others. Reflection 7
This article was quite interesting and very informative. It not only shows you the importance of getting to know your students as soon as possible, but it gives you guidelines which to follow. Not only did the article mention this, but I know that it is important to learn about your students and their interests. It not only helps you in communicating with them more effectively, but it also makes the environment more comfortable for the students. It may not be easy to learn about your students, but at least we are certain in the way that it can be done. Having your students engage in class discussions is a way to see how they interpret and view different subjects. Another issue that arises in a classroom setting is that there are many different cultures that are surrounding you. You need to be able to address these students without saying things that can be hurtful or demeaning to their lifestyle or culture. This article comes in handy because it tells you what to do and how to address matters in such situations. As a teacher in the making, I believe that I have the confidence to enter into a classroom and be able to set a comfortable setting. I do not have any issues with culturally different people and have experience dealing with such children. Right from the beginning, teachers have to make sure to set rules and boundaries in the classroom. There are times when people feel too comfortable and become unaware of what they are saying and this can become an issue.
This is for sure an article that I am planning on keeping for my own personal use. I know that it will benefit me in the future to have this knowledge and be able to have something that I can look back on for reference. This poem seems to be written by someone who has been through a lot. Whether the writer was a victim of racism or not, Arizona is to be blamed for what is going on right now. They are trying to perhaps maintain control over the people and take out those who don’t belong, but if anything, they are creating more chaos. The manner in which they have chosen to “handle” things is incorrect. They are racial profiling people and suspecting that they are illegal aliens based on their appearance. It is not only degrading, but also embarrassing to live in a place that thinks of its people this way. Simply trying to eliminate people that “don’t belong” is not the solution for a better community or life. The only outcome I see in this is that it will create hatred among those who are culturally different from each other. Instead of progressing and moving forward, Arizona is going back to the messed up ways this world once was.

Most Interesting of Our American Bird
This poem happens to be very touching because it describes the horrific life the American birds are living due to our actions – intentional or unintentional. Most people are aware of the tragedies that are occurring today, but it isn’t until you see it firsthand that you are able to fully understand the pain that we are causing these animals. Just as the poem explains, birds are willing to do anything for their young. They protect them and are even willing to sacrifice themselves for the safety of their family. It is heartbreaking to see such innocent creatures go through such pain when they are playing their part very well. Their lives are in danger because of the decisions and actions that the human race makes. Some decisions may be irresponsible and others unintentional, but in the end we have to realize that we are putting other lives in danger. Whether they are birds or any other kind of animal, they deserve to live to their heart’s content.

Reflection 6
Rites of passages are important because they signify important changes in someone’s life. Just the same way that most of us celebrate someone’s birthday, different cultures celebrate any change that occurs in life such as: marriage, death, transition from child to adult, etc. although I used a birthday celebration as an example, rites of passages are far more important for some people. This is based on certain cultures and beliefs. It is a ritual that you must go through in order to accept the certain transition that is occurring.

They had to endure great obstacles to prove that they can become men. Everyone else would celebrate and have to wait for the outcome. This ritual is how they carry out their rites of passage.
The Sambia, on the other hand, describes the way that men get ready to become adults, which entails them to be prepared for sexual intercourse. There is a process in which the male experiences homosexuality and heterosexuality before his maturing wife goes through her first menstruation. From this point on, the male is ready to have sexual intercourse with his wife and no one else. This ritual signifies that the male is now considered a man.

Reflection 5
The Little Rock Nine teenagers went through a tough high school experience. They were not only brave, but they were determined to stand up and fight for their rights. To be a Little Rock Nine is to be a hero in many people’s eyes. If I were one of the Little Rock Nine kids, I would most probably be overwhelmed with everything that was going on, but at the same time, I believe that it would bring great satisfaction to know that I was someone who made a difference in the world.
Needing armed guards to enter a school is pretty intense for a group of teenagers. I would have been frightened to know that I needed guards to protect me just so I can enter a school. There are people out there that are willing to hurt teenagers just because they are trying to do what they believe is right for society. Just imagining what could have happened if the armed guards were not there is outrages. To think that there are people who have actually built hatred and resentment against these teenagers is ludicrous. Had the guards not been there, these kids would have probably been trampled and beat by the whites. They constantly heard rude and derogative comments being made about them and they had no other choice but to take it. If I happened to be one of the Little Rock Nine’s I would have tried to ignore the shouts and comments that people were throwing my way. It may be easier said than done, but I would not let their words make me do something that I would later regret. After all, my purpose in being there would not be to satisfy them or be liked by them, my purpose would be to make a point and fight for what I believe is correct. Maintaining your cool would have to be one of the hardest things to do, but it shows that you are not there to start trouble or disturb the peace, but that you are there to learn and be treated like everyone else.
I know that this is the way things were back then, but I have a hard time trying to understand how and why people thought it was the best solution to keep blacks and whites segregated. The Little Rock Nine story is very touching. It goes to show that nothing comes easy in life. There are many things out there that we want and hard to get, but with enough effort and determination, it is quite possible to get anything you want.

Reflection 4
In my opinion, culture describes who we are. It gives us a sense of what we should be doing and what is expected from us. Our culture leads us in the direction that we believe is best for us. One thing that I can’t help but agree with is that culture is adaptable. We are not automatically born into a certain culture; we have to be raised in that culture in order to build an understanding for it. Everything that we do today, whether it be the foods we eat, the way we talk, the way we dress, has been learned over the years. Nothing has been easily granted to us. We have been able to survive throughout all these years as we continue to learn new things each and every day. It is astonishing to see what this world has become compared to what it used to be. We have gone through so much and we have all done it together. This world is made up of different people with different customs and different ways of communicating, but at the end of the day, we have no choice but to move forward as one.
I love the fact that we are able to interact with people from different cultures everyday because we get to experience something other than what we are used to. It would be quite boring if everyone shared the same interests and beliefs. If this world ran based on one culture, we would not be where we are today. We would not have the privilege of learning from each other and learning to accept others who are different from us. Overall, we all need to learn how to accept those who are different from us. Culture is a choice and we need to be able to respect the decisions that people make. Not everyone will agree on the same beliefs and ways of doing things and that is fine. So far, it has been possible to live in a world full of different cultures and it shall remain this way.

Stormy Weather-Lena Horne
This poem was exceptionally interesting and heartfelt. I, for one, did not know about Lena Horne, but after watching a few videos, I have gained respect for her work. She is a very beautiful and talented woman. This poem is so vivid and detailed that I felt like I was right there watching her with you. As a 12 year old boy, I can understand why you looked at her as if she was some kind of goddess. Lena Horne was very talented and deserves the admiration you are giving her. Your poem is extremely touching and it made me appreciate Lena even though I didn’t know her.
Awaiting an Appropriate Provocation
Even though I am not very informed in this subject, this poem gave me a better insight as to what is occurring today. Whether you may agree with this or not, the matter of the fact is that it is happening and those who are not aware of it, should have an interest in it. I am having a difficult time agreeing with the way things are being handled. I believe that different measures could and should be taken to enforce these regulations. Overall, it is heartbreaking to imagine the tragedy families are going through right now. There are people out there who are married and have children and who are risking their family being torn apart. What is it that they are supposed to do other than wait in anticipation? Is this, in fact, the correct way to deal with this issue? Should we start deporting people who have already been living here for so many years? The same people who are doing the jobs that many of us would not even think twice about doing? Just like us citizens, these immigrants desire something bigger and better. They have dreams and are trying to reach for them while others are shooting them down.

Reflection 3
A paradigm is the way something is commonly viewed. It basically describes the way things work, how they work, and why they work. A paradigm shift is described as a significant change in the way that you think. There are many people that are constantly experiencing paradigm shifts in their everyday lives. They may have to view things differently in order to go on with their day. In my opinion, paradigm shifts can occur intentionally as well as unintentionally. I have experienced both before. There have been times in my life where I felt stuck in a certain situation. The only way that I was able to survive the situation and continue with ease was to experience a paradigm shift. I had to force myself to see things from a different angle and in the end, I benefited from it. I would much rather focus on the positive outcomes of a situation rather than the negatives. Experiencing these kinds of shifts has helped me in accomplishing several of my goals and tasks.
It is important for teachers to experience paradigm shifts because they have to keep in mind that their occupation involves dealing with other people. It would be very difficult to try to teach a group of individuals when you are only willing to see things one way; and that being your way. As a teacher, I believe that you need to be able to shift your mindset and alter the way you view situations. Being able to change the way you think can lead to various different outcomes.
There is so much more out there that we have yet to experience. Most of us are stuck in that one mindset because that is what we are used to and it is where we might feel more comfortable. Other may be scared to change the way they think because they fear the changes that can take place. Experiencing paradigm shift, in my opinion, is something wonderful. It makes me feel in control of my body and of my mind. Yes, it is normal to want to say within your comfort zone, but sometime I just want to see what else is out there and see what else I can learn. Viewing something from a different angle as really helped me become more open-minded. Not only for teachers, but I think that everyone should have the opportunity and willingness to experience paradigms changes.

Reflection 2
Reading these articles has made me realize that it is important to accept other people regardless of their differences. I believe it is not only important to accept yourself, but to also be able to accept others. This does not mean that you have to agree with everything that everyone does, but you should not have to necessarily disagree with it either. The process of accepting others may involve changing your mindset. It would be of great benefit to alter the way you view the world and the people living in it. Those people who are judgmental, not only have issues accepting people who are different than them, but they also have issues accepting themselves many times. Changing your mindset can encourage you to become a more positive individual. It will make you realize what aspects in life are truly important and help you focus on them.
Another factor that contributes to the manner in which we accept people deals with our observations and judgments. Judgmental people have difficult time trying to accept people for who they are because they are constantly critiquing them. There is a big difference between a judgmental person and an observant person. Unlike judgmental people, observers do not jump to conclusions based only on one instance. Those who observe others, take everything into consideration. They base their decisions on the frequency and endurance of certain actions. There is no need to constantly judge people over their actions because sometimes their actions don’t exactly measure up to who they truly are.
These articles have really encouraged me to change the way I see the world. There is so much more out there that we are refraining ourselves from seeing. The way I choose to see things determines what I like or dislike. If I were to modify the way I think, I would be able to experience and accept new things. For one, I thought I was a multi-culturally aware person, but I realized that there is so much more that I have to learn. The fact that I can communicate and accept those who are multi-culturally different does not mean that I am 100% aware and conscious of them. There are several skills that I have yet to discover, but that I am willing to learn.

Reading these history based articles somewhat opens my eyes to the way people perceive things. In my opinion, no one really knows exactly what happened several thousands of years ago. It is quite interesting to observe the way people analyze certain artifacts and come up with rather adequate conclusions. I believe it is important for everyone to know a little bit of history, especially when it involves their ancestors. Not everyone may agree with the information presented, but it will surely make you become more aware of what is out there. No matter what questions we encounter in our lives, there is always some kind of response or opinion out there that addresses the matter. Reading the facts and opinions presented in these articles help me in figuring out my own questions. I do not have to necessarily agree with everything said, but I am able to come up with my own views and opinions with the information I was provided with. Overall, the articles were interesting and I learned a lot from them. Just knowing these little facts on how and when fire was used, how the invention of the wheel came about, and the history of writing can help someone become a more, well rounded individual. Not only have I learned new things from reading the articles, but it shows how much we have learned and accomplished over the years. It also encourages me to pursue my dreams because it shows that anything is possible as long as you work hard and put your all into it.

A Little About Me
Hello everyone, my name is Ariana Milian and I was born on June 9, 1991. On my free time, I enjoy the company of my friends and family. I basically enjoy anything that keeps me busy and moving. I am currently attending Miami Dade College north campus. This is my first year of college and it has been quite an experience. I later plan to transfer to Florida International University where I will receive my master's degree. My first choice in my major was to study Business Administration. Since I studied marketing, financial services, and accounting in high school, I thought I would continue my education in this field of study. Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to open up my very own daycare. I thought majoring in Business Administration would help me and guide me in this direction, but after taking a few classes, I realized that I was not enjoying what I was doing. In order to run a daycare, you not only need business management skills, but you also need to have experience with children. I later came to the conclusion that I would much rather learn about children than businesses. I am the type of person that needs to do hands on things in order to stay focused and entertained. I am interested in becoming an elementary school teacher because I enjoy children's company. I can picture myself sitting in a classroom interacting with children instead of sitting in an office interacting with a computer. In my opinion, children are wonderful and full of energy. They are always so adventurous and they can brighten up my entire day. I love to be surrounded by them. I have the patience and the strong desire to teach and help others. Not only would it be an adventurous experience to teach children, but it will also bring me joy and satisfaction to see them learn and grow. There is also a lot that one can learn themselves from spending their time with children. Many people may not realize this, but there are little things that children do and say that make you realize what values you should have. Overall, I want a career that I am most certain I will enjoy everyday. At the end of the day, I will be more than happy to know that I am making a difference in someone's life. What better difference to make than in a growing child's life?
